Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Afdah 2022 grows on its forerunner with backstory pulled straight from the videogames, primarily Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and faithfully adapts them to the film franchise. There are tiny parallels wherever you look, which as a Sonic fan does not go ignored. This film was clearly designed for the fans, and it shows, showcasing the degree of attention that went into it. Sonic, new buddy Tails, and opponent Knuckles are all presented quite similarly to their video game counterparts, and the wonderful small moments they share are nothing short of heartwarming. Furthermore, everyone's humor felt natural and in personality, but nothing looked out of place in the least.
The action scenes had me and others in my viewing on the edge of our couches, and the last act was a delight from beginning to end, with many interesting shocks. Some of the younger children at my viewing struggled to hold their attention, but the others sat quietly the entire time, proving that this movie can be enjoyed by a wider range of people.
